An outbuilding at the Palace of Versailles will be converted into a 23-key luxury hotel, set to open late in 2011.
The conversion of Hotel du Grand Controle—the traditional home of the chateau's treasurers—will be executed by Belgium-based Ivy International for about €5.5 million. Ivy will pay the government an undisclosed annual fee to lease the building.
The palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is famous for its Hall of Mirrors. It was France’s official seat of power from 1682 until the French Revolution of 1789.
Cash-strapped France has been considering converting historic buildings, including some of its royal chateaux, into luxury hotels as a way to generate additional income. An October recommendation under review by France’s culture minister includes a proposal to turn the Chambord and Rambouillet chateaux into high-end lodging. Also under consideration as a hotel is the Chateau de Fontainebleau.
